Burglars Unsuccessfully Try to Break-In to AlarmForce President Joel Matlin’s Home

On February 4th 2012 at 11pm Joel Matlin CEO of AlarmForce received an alert on his smartphone showing video of a man in a baseball cap standing at his front door. At the time, Mr. Matlin was in Fort Lauderdale Florida on vacation.
The man left, but Matlin called police and asked them to patrol his neighbourhood in the York Mills and Bayview area in Toronto. Later the man along with 4 others tried to break into Matlin’s home but was unsuccessful and ultimately arrested thanks to the video evidence taken from Matlin’s VideoRelay system.
This story was feature on the front page of the Toronto Star today.

From the Toronto Star:

“On Tuesday, Toronto police confirmed they have arrested three men who were in jail in Lindsay on related offences, and charged them with the attempted break-in at Matlin’s home as well as several other offences across Greater Toronto.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
Matlin said new video relay technology, which enabled him to see his front door all the way from Florida on his smartphone, has provided him an extra measure of comfort.

Whenever he tells people about the incident, they remark that they can’t believe burglars tested his house.
“But I don’t think they knew,” Matlin said, adding he has gained a new understanding of what other victims of home burglaries go through.”
